The incident took place around 3 a.m. Tuesday after a resident Mill Plain Road called the police to report several suspicious males in dark clothing walking up and down her neighbor’s driveways attempting to enter their cars, said Lt. Robert Kalamaras.
The resident was able to provide real-time observations to the officers responding that her neighbor’s vehicle was now backing out of the driveway and she believed it was being stolen, he said.
Officers quickly located the vehicle near Mill Plain Road and attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop. The suspects engaged officers in pursuit for a short time before officers were successfully able to deploy spike-strips in attempt to stop the pursuit, Kalamaras said.
The vehicle continued southbound on Tunxis Hill Road before failing to negotiate a curve at the intersection of Kings Highway East and striking a utility pole. The operator fled on foot and was taken into custody near the collision scene. The passenger remained in the vehicle and was extricated by Fairfield Fire Department, he added.
Both suspects were taken to area hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. It was later determined that both suspects were 17-year-old, juvenile males, from Bridgeport.
The driver was charged with larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny, burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, criminal attempt to commit larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny, engaging police in pursuit, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license. He is scheduled to appear in court on May 15.
